I hold Willa’s hand as the doctor on the premises evaluates her. He’s palpating her neck while she swallows when Thea walks into the living room.

Goddamn, she’s gorgeous. Disheveled bedhead, black tie gala, or lingerie—she’s beautiful every damn way. I can’t believe I’ve had my head up my ass so damn long.

When Willa squeezes my hand, I realize I’m holding my breath. I exhale hard and hold out my available hand to my precious wife-to-be. Wife. Damn if I didn’t pull a rabbit out of the hat in this shit show of my own doing.

Thea’s lips sway in that way as she saunters over to me and takes my hand. I promptly kiss each of her knuckles. “Good morning, my love,” I murmur.

“Everything ok—” Thea’s free hand flies over her mouth the instant Willa looks up at her. The tears are instant. I can feel the shake of her hand and sense the wobble in her legs.

My hand wraps around her waist as I pull her into my body, needing to both steady her and hold her close as she experiences the awe of this moment—the one she’s waited just shy of seventeen years to have.

“Mom?” Willa cries.

I manage to pull the doctor out of the way before Thea sends the man careening into a concrete wall. One of her hands holds the back of Willa’s head while the other one curls around her back.

“I’m so damn sorry,” Thea heaves. “I was so young and stupid to think someone else could raise you better than me.”

I’m going to turn into a puddle if I continue to watch my two loves wail and lament. Under the auspice of giving them a minute to themselves, I turn toward the doctor.

“She gonna be okay?” I don’t want to interrupt my girls’ reunion or cause them undue stress if he has anything worrisome to say, so my question is barely audible.

“Her vitals are surprisingly good. I’d like her to have some lab work done—CBC panel, vitamin D, iron, a few others. Just a precaution. I’ll have the lab tech come by before lunch, if that’s okay.”

I nod my head as I focus on retaining the tears that beckon. I’ve cried more in the last week than my entire life, that’s for damn sure.

“She’s not complaining of any body pains, and I’m not concerned for any breaks or sprains. Normal reflexes. The biggest thing, obviously, is her strength and weight. I’d like her to do a telehealth visit with a nutritionist this afternoon. We’ll have the lab results back by then, so this will allow us to get a comprehensive plan together.”

Since I’m not exactly known for my social skills, nor do I care two shits for whether my abrupt exit from this conversation may be offensive, I strut toward my family and wrap my arms firmly behind each of their backs while I join their tear-fest.

I guess even the most hardened and brazen warriors have a soft spot. Family, Jesus! I would’ve missed this if my head was still up my ass.
